The dilemma for Frank today is who does he play in midfield with Kante available again and after two positive displays from Barkley as the rest of the team virtually picks itself given whose available.
Assuming Frank decides to go 4/3/2/1/ 4/3/3 again which is his preferred formations someone has to play the pivot role in front of the back 4 and that is likely to be either Kovacic or more likely Jorginho I suspect Frank will probably select Kante on the right of the 3 and Mount on the left of the midfield 3 given that Frank has started him in 20 of the 22 PL games which would be tough on Barkley but Frank admitted last weekend that he took a risk playing such an attacking midfield at home to Burnley and I think he will be a bit more conservative for an away trip to Newcastle.
We’ll know at 4:30pm today whichever side is picked let’s hope it’s good enough to get an away win at Newcastle.

18th January 2020 at 8:44 am #60848“There has been recent press speculation that Kante might be looking for a new challenge away from Chelsea, predictably amplified on social media with thoughts of cashing out on him in return for some stellar talent whose performance on FIFA 20 defies belief. Add to this the perennial debate about whether or not Kante is being played in his best position or not, then it is enough to worry any Chelsea supporter who loves and admires the diminutive Frenchman with the engaging smile, my nephew included.
But, surely thoughts of selling Kante are nonsense?
There is a strong argument to say that Kante remains Chelseaโs only genuinely world class player. Over and above that, his exemplary attitude and engaging demeanour make him a unique addition to any squad. Form is temporary, class is permanent and class such as Kanteโs is very difficult to replace.” Football London 18/01

18th January 2020 at 9:28 am #60851We need a leader, never going to get a John Terry quality type leader again in my lifetime I wouldn’t think but we need better than Dave as a leader out there.

18th January 2020 at 5:27 pm #60899The line up I expected from Frank if he deemed Kante fit enough.
Barkley unfortunate to lose his place to Kante but Mount was always likely to play imo.
Barkley available off the bench if necessary.
Fingers crossed for this one.?

18th January 2020 at 7:43 pm #60911The attack is the best form of defence for this team. it has been proven over and over against Bournemouth, and now against Newcastle. teams know if they frustrate us they have a chance. and Steve Bruce used similar tactic as that of Eddie Howe. we never seem to learn from our mistakes. there is no point in playing Kante in that advanced role anymore. he is disrupting our rhythm. play Barkley or whoever is capable there. just play Kante in his natural position. or take the bull by the horn and bench him for Jorginho. when both of these players playing in the same team they are just a liability to us. i can’t believe i would say this. but one has got the technique but not the physicality and pace whilst the other got the physicality and pace but not the technicality.
And people are saying we need attack all day. but how many chances have we created for our striker today? well going back to the drawing board is the only way. we no longer have Hazard, and we are attacking with 4 rather than 6 as Liverpool and City do. replace not only Hazard but also Fabregas who would have unlocked this type of opposition.

18th January 2020 at 7:48 pm #60912The story of our season really totally dominate but canโt create any clear cut chances and then canโt defend the cross again.
No creativity little to no threat up front and really poor ability when defending the high ball we need a dominant centre back, some more creativity and a better offensive alternative to Tammy.
I think itโs really touch and go whether we ultimately make the CL if we canโt bring some quality into the areas we need it in January which currently looks really difficult.

18th January 2020 at 7:53 pm #60914“We didnโt score. It has been the story of part of our season. We canโt just rely on Tammy. We have to have goals across the front line. That is football. I canโt complain about anything. We canโt give away headers in our box.” From Frank’s press conference

19th January 2020 at 6:18 am #60935AnonymousThe front 4 must take responsibility with so much possession and they don’t have the ability to open up any decent chances, Abrahaw will always be a good average striker Willian had another disastrous game. Mount and especially Odio look very overrated Hopefully genuine talented players like Pulisic and Loftus cheek can get over their injury prone bodies, we cannot attack, win or defend any ball in the air, Lampards inexperience is showing badly.

19th January 2020 at 9:08 am #60936I think thatโs harsh moos. Chelsea are really ahead of were they should be after franks 1st 6 months. Newcastle defended with ten men behind the ball.
If Abraham doesnโt score again tvis season then heโs already had a brilliant season.
A left back is needed. Really not sure about the keeper. Can pull off some great saves but he makes to many mistakes
Some really good young players there and Chelsea are going to have results like yday when they are in a massive transition period

19th January 2020 at 11:04 am #60947AnonymousWe were always going to struggle going to Newcastle. They are a bogey side for us away and we find it difficult to get results up there.
Our last 10 games up there going back a decade. Premier League only.

3rd Dec 2011 Won 0-3

19th January 2020 at 3:09 pm #60951AnonymousFood for defensive thought.
Out of 23 games played this season, chelsea have only played 9 games where the back three or four have been the same.
Emerson, Zouma, Christensen, Dave
Alonso, Tomori, Zouma, Dave
Rudiger, Zouma, Tomori. As far as the rest goes, its either Emerson over alonso, now dave is filling in at left back so James has come in…
Frank hasn’t worked out his favorite back line pairing yet, even when two do play together for more than one game, often the central pairing switches, so one game Christensen will play left side of the two, rudiger the right and vice versa.
Otherwise, the best pairing is actually Christensen and Tomori as the pair and I’d have James and dave as the wingbacks. Interestingly, that is one selection Lampard has not tried in a back four as far as I can see.
This will upset some, but a defender who would improve our back line would be Tyrone Mings…
Left footed, rough house in the tackle, slow like JT, being trained by him too, wins most Ariel duels, reads the game well…. Probably quite intelligent like Lampard as he went to Millfield school too where loads of English Rugby players have emerged from over the years._____________________________

19th January 2020 at 4:11 pm #60957Iโve not watched Chelsea play much this season, but from what I have seen, they seem to be playing to their weakness.
They look really good breaking forward really quickly, but struggle to break down a week set defence, which then begs the question why do they play out from the back so slowly….Pagan

19th January 2020 at 6:17 pm #60996I was reading from somewhere today, that our win percentage with Kante in the side is 29% and without Kante in the side is 71%. this confirms that Kante isn’t doing well at the position that we are utilizing him currently. which means, he should be brought back to the holding role. and bench Jorginho although he hasn’t done anything wrong. and that is the dilemma that Lampard has. In the current form, Willian doesn’t deserve a new contract. unless he replicates his pre-Christmas form. I would play Alonso and back three against Arsenal. at least Alonso will give us a goal threat.

20th January 2020 at 1:44 pm #61064Hopefully a chance to bounce back tomorrow but Arsenal are a much better team now under Arteta. Alonso available and given that Reece James has been MOM in recent games weโve got to hope heโs fit for tomorrow Frank thinks he has a chance but he will be assessed tomorrow.

21st January 2020 at 9:12 am #61115AnonymousThe honeymoon is over and now we find out what Lampard is about. Well, I say now, he’ll need time and also the chance to get his own players in. Agree with Sean regards to them being ahead of where they should be. Even through this patch, Chelsea are still picking up some wins.
A CL spot is looking pretty likely but to lose against Newcastle was just poor. Chelsea could be 8 points clear of Utd now with a win but they aren’t exactly placing a flag on 4th themselves. Of course there are also Wolves and Sheffield Utd. 2 very good sides who might give you a better run for your money (Booo Wolves YYYayy Shieffield!!).
Who would have thought Chelsea would be reasonably comfortable in 4th at this stage? Not me that’s for sure. There was a prediction thread. I think I had Chelsea to finish outside the top 6.

21st January 2020 at 9:42 am #61119AnonymousAbraham is a strange one. he has so far scored 13 goals which is a great return but I still don’t think he’s much more than a good championship striker. that might seem like a very harsh statement based on his goal return but I will explain. 7 of his 13 goals came in the first 5 games. they were Norwich (2) Sheffield United (2) and Wolves (3). he has since scored 6 goals in 17 games and they were against Norwich (17th) Sheffield United (10th) Wolves (19th) Southampton (17th) Watford (20th) Palace (12th) Villa (16th) Arsenal (12th) and Burnley (15th). those are the league positions of each team the week he scored against them. I do think it is really important to have a player that can score against the lower teams as they can often be difficult to break down but he is not the striker to lead a team forward.
Mason Mount and Hudson Odoi whilst young are probably two of the most overhyped players. They both seem to be guaranteed picks for England when fit based on glimpses of potential. Mount started the season brilliantly but has had more ineffective games than effective. Got an England call up based on two goals he scored in the first 3 games and is spoken about like the second coming of Lampard. Hudson Odoi is raved about but has literally done nothing.
Credit to Frank for giving these players a chance although I question how much choice he actually had. when it works its great, but when it doesn’t you need to be able to get them out the limelight which he hasn’t done.
