Commiserations, Gary. Genuine question about Sterling…looking simply at goals scored, he has had a phenomenal couple of seasons, but just how good do you really think he is? His finishing has always been hit or miss (excuse the pun!), and he just hasn’t got a left foot, and yet Pep always seems to pick him. I guess you can’t argue with his goals tally, and so many have come in exactly the same scenario as last night’s miss i.e. coming in at the back post and tapping in. But I have always thought Sane was the better player.
Would be interested in City fan’s thoughts.
Couldn’t believe the team selection either last night…no Mahrez, Foden or either of the Silvas. Surely David Silva would have made the difference last night?
I’m aware this might seem that I’m a gloating Liverpool fan, but I’m honestly trying not to be, but Kyle Walker? Really? And I’m not sure just how great Rodri and Gundogan are. They are good players, of course they are, but are they of the highest quality? Of the starting 11 last night, only KDB and Laporte would get in to my team, and as someone above mentioned the defence hasn’t really improved since Laporte came back in to the team, so maybe the jury is out on him as well to an extent. Fernandinho, Aguero and David Silva are so important to the team, but all are the wrong side of 30, and are either leaving or have injury issues, as is Garcia who everyone tells me is going to be great, but he’s going at some point as well. I love the look of Foden, but from an outsiders POV it seems you’re going to be very reliant on him, obviously KDB, and keeping Aguero fit next season.
Sorry if this seems I’m rubbing it in, and it is probably the wrong time to post this, and for that I apologise, but how worried are you boys?

16th August 2020 at 11:44 am #152493From what I have seen of Foden with his creativity and also can finish could not believe that he was not brought on at any stage. He is a wonderful talent. They only used 2 subs as well. Rather odd.

16th August 2020 at 11:50 am #152500AnonymousCity could have, should have, but didnt… that a manager of pep’s calibre should not play his best starting team in a competition he’s looking to win In the knock out stages smacks of arrogance or a manager in decline.

16th August 2020 at 12:46 pm #152541I suspect that pep out thought himself
Figured Lyon would have a game plan for the expected starting 11 and formation so changed to bewilder them and maybe save legs for the semi in to the bargain
Had it worked he would have been deemed genius and let’s not forget but for fine margins they still should have won
Some players also let him down but this is football and what makes it great to watch (when it’s not your team on the receiving end!)
I think when you look at all the teams in Europe few bargains or gems are uncovered any more especially in defence so it’s easy to say X amount has been spent
Those who can spend money do
Those that can’t don’t and those are the ones by definition that are likely to uncover a gem… if they don’t they haven’t spent as much and less is made of it as they aren’t at the top of the treeHindsight is wonderful
Arteta changed and it worked
Ole tried and failed and now pep hasFine fine margins all round and I think more than a few people need to step back a little and smell the roses…. not the manure (pun intended united lads ??)

16th August 2020 at 12:46 pm #152542This is what I was trying to say in an the coaches thread Brian. Pep inherited a very good team and has spent nearly 800 m yet you think city need another 4 players mate?
That’s at least another 150m. That will bring peps spending near to a billion .Not having a go at all but when does the spending stop and you work with the squad you have spent millions on ?

16th August 2020 at 12:49 pm #152544Hightown, I have to say sterling has vastly improved under pep. He still misses some sitters but he scores a lot of goals. He was very raw with us and could hardjy shoot. He has really got better since he left us and worked under pep. Much better close control , better finisher and scores some great goals
Foden looks a very exciting prospect and is a ready made replacement for silva

Wenger inherited one of the best defensive units ever
And struggled when they aged and needed replacing
He bought well at the start then poorer and poorer as time went on
Great coach but as with all with limitations
Just like Eddie Howe or the Burnley coach
Clearly very good actual coaches but still they are never snapped up by a bigger club …..
makes you wonder_____________________________

16th August 2020 at 1:02 pm #152558Ye can’t argue with that stevo but I stand by what I say.
Your defending pep for last night and I’m not. All about opinions mate. He’s the best coach in the world who has turn the game on its head with the football his teams play. I’d like to see him spend less after spending nearly 800m and still needing to rebuild. That’s just crazy mate
Wenger was there nearly 20 years. Pep is at city 4 seasons
Eddie Howes stock has dropped ten fold. Millions spent and Bournemouth relegated
Dyche outstanding job on a shoe string. Reminds me of big Sam though with his tactics so I don’t think a top 6 club would take a chance on him

16th August 2020 at 1:12 pm #152566Hi Andy. “I’m aware this might seem that I’m a gloating Liverpool fan…” Not at all, I know you better than that mate.
Regarding Sterling, you cannot argue with his goals tally or even his assists. Imo though, and I’ve felt this from the time he signed, his decision making at key times in a game is still somewhat questionable. It has improved under Pep but I feel it shows a bit of a lack of football nous. You mentioned Sane but as an overall package, Sterling is the better player – Sane’s concentration and attitude (at times) let him down. Sane’s biggest asset to the team was that he brought something different, another option. Still think we didn’t get full value for him off the German bullies though.
Kyle Walker was probably our MoM against RM but last night he was asked to do something he’s not totally comfortable with – an out and out wing back, and at times, certainly in the first half and until Mahrez came on, was left covering the whole of our right.
We can forget Garcia, he’s off back to Spain. Laporte suffered an horrendous injury and will take time to get back to previous levels. The introduction of Ake, we hope will help but there’s no guarantees.
What puzzles me is the recent handling of Bernardo Silva, who appears out of favour as a starter at present – we certainly missed his energy and mobility in the middle of the park.
What else do we need going forward? Brian mentioned another 4/5 players. Certainly Pep should be targeting another CB (offloading Ottamendi and Garcia) and two young, quick full backs. Another striker would also be handy._____________________________

16th August 2020 at 1:32 pm #152584Actually not defending pep Sean he fucked up big time and not for the first time but then when you set the bar so high you have further to fall
Pep isn’t infallible or should escape fans ire. Just viewing it from a different angle for the sake of debate
It’s good to play devil’s advocate once in a while ?
Unless it’s Maureen at any club especially the spuds ??_____________________________

16th August 2020 at 1:36 pm #152586As for dych what other choice does he have but to do that with his restrictions
But as far as coaching goes he certainly makes a team and improves players imho and if he can does there he would elsewhere
With a bigger budget and better players I’m sure he would play different styles
It’s all conjecture until you can see if it’s true thoShame for Howe yes he spent reasonably big but still at the 3rd or 4th tier of who he could actually get to play at Bournemouth….
Deserve a chance at a bigger club as does dych for me

16th August 2020 at 1:39 pm #152590Also shows fans are never happy unless they win every game and every trophy
Even klopp got done after winning the Pl because you lost a few games and didn’t get the 100 points
The higher the bar the higher the expectations_____________________________

16th August 2020 at 1:46 pm #152596Stevo ye fair points but I heard the sane arguments for Moyes and big Sam. Bigger budgets and better players yet still played the same horrible football. I suppose we will never know unless dyche goes to a bigger club chum.
Ah not sure there were many complaining about klopp and 100 points mate. A few on here maybe but no way the majority of fans. I think some fans wanted to see us play like champions mate .
We will see next season as every Liverpool fan should be content now for at least a season even if we do very bad as we just won the league for the 1st time in 30 years

16th August 2020 at 1:56 pm #152604That’s the ticket Sean
As for big Sam I never thought he could change styles and notes just did “ok” whilst not spending
Hardly like Everton are tiny club
Trouble is some of these managers stay to long and get stuck in one mindset and it must be hard to suddenly change
I have a feeling dyche could seems intelligentBut who knows
Anyway you’re in for a tough time next year Arsenal will push you all the way ?????
That should cheer Nancy up
Seems like he could use a laugh_____________________________

16th August 2020 at 2:14 pm #152619Damn shame we can’t chew the fat like this over a beer or 3 ?
Serious question to you and the other pool lads, top of the tree and rightly so
But seems you won’t have any serious additions this summer
Does that worry you? Most would agree to stay at the top is the hard part and needs constant evolution
Even a one year miss can have long repercussions like the spuds
Players age and lose form and before you know it the rebuild is massive instead of just the odd one or two

16th August 2020 at 2:26 pm #152628Stevo to be honest. Every decision we seem to make these days is the right one. While for the previous 25 years before klopp cane, we made do so many bad decisions. We really did fuck so many things up for decades
The club is in the best state it’s been in, in years. On and off the pitch. The owners have made mistakes but they listen to the fans.
People said last season, we really needed to buy but we didn’t. We had spent a lot of money already and have a great squad. I think we need a good back up for the front 3. We have been very lucky that none of them missed many games last season.
I’d love to see Thiago come in. He’s just to good to let the chance pass of signing him. Lovren is gone but I think klopp has fabhino in mind as our 4th choice centre back
I really can’t see us spending much at all and I’m fine with that. I fully trust every decision the club and klopp come to.For the first time in decades, I’ve absolutely nothing to moan about. It’s a really special time to be a Liverpool fan and I’m going to enjoy it while I can. I’m already dreading klopp leaving. Him, the city and club is just the perfect match
I just hope if things go tits up next season that our supporters stay calm . It’s going to be very tough next season to regain the title and we really need fans back in the stadiums as klopp and the players feed off the anfield crowd mate

16th August 2020 at 2:35 pm #152635Dangerous game imo as Stevo says injuries and loss of form can upset the equilibrium of a team and if you don’t improve the team every season the train can come of the rails.
Having said that Klopp is undoubtedly a great Coach and I think Liverpool will be fine to stay as they are for a season just adding a squad player here and there and it would be a brave man who would say they won’t win back to back titles.
City are Liverpool’s only realistic challengers next Season but they’ve got their own problems now too and without we get a wonky donky season a la Leicester and one of the chasing pack come through and make an unlikely challenge its difficult not to see back to back titles for Liverpool.
Be great to see 3 or 4 teams fighting for the PL title but I think we are a season of two off that just yet.
But football is cyclical and nothing lasts forever. Personally I wouldn’t swap where Chelsea are now with any other Club as I think the future looks very exciting.

16th August 2020 at 2:55 pm #152653Good post Sean
Always nice to see a fan relaxed and happy
Far to few are never satisfied
Just hope my club can sort themselves out to at least challenge and make other teams genuinely worry about having to play us whoever they may be
Won’t be holding my breath but somehow we still won a trophy! Many teams would swap with us even as bad as we have been
