It’s quite bizarre how Chelsea find themselves without a decent option up front having spent so much money. Meanwhile you have their former striker Giroud firing his side to the semis and their current (loaned out) striker Lukaku firing his side to the semis. If Brighton are currently the template for how to run a club correctly, Chelsea are very much the opposite.

19th April 2023 at 8:04 am #206376To be honest I think most people raised an eyebrow when they put so many players together mid season with a scatter gun approach to transfers. Who even identified them as targets? With the amount they spent they surely could have met a top strikers buy out or paid over the top for one and kept most of the squad as it was.
Not trying to upset the Chelsea lads or feel smug with a told you so. But Ed is right it’s a pretty terrible way to run a club.

19th April 2023 at 8:08 am #206377Being vaguely serious, I don’t believe for one minute that nobody at the Jammy Dodgers hadn’t realized they had “forgot” a striker, not a club of that size and with that experience.
Part of me does think the new owners were looking at the “false 9” type of squad, thinking enough quality in the attacking positions with a largish group of players who are all capable of hitting the 10-15 goals a season level would carry them through… a team without a focal point (or a “superstar” up top)… very much of the “moneyball” theory developed in baseball. And combine this with the “baseball” tactic of having pretty much unlimited subs during a basball game and the fairly new introduction of 5 subs in the Prem I can see the reasoning behind their approach… “so this starting 11 isn’t working, let’s change half the team during the match” idea.
Anyway, that’s my theory… and let’s face it, not like the club doesn’t have a history of throwing money at the problem once they discover what the problem is (and I think we can agree what the problem is this season!). Be very surprised if they’re not back in the “Top7” and fighting for a CL spot next season…

19th April 2023 at 8:31 am #206379We didn’t forget a striker Tuchel chose aubameyang.
As best as I can understand it boehly gutted the internal infrastructure and the first transfer window was done without any real input from any qualified recruitment team. It was based on the coaches opinions of players and boehly’s negotiations.
The second batch seemed to be different profile and I think these ones were selected by recruitment team.
There is no reason for anyone to believe they are worth half the money spent at this point.
Despite all the crap my only fear is breaching FFP.
I am rather optimistic that with no european football next season and a trimmed squad we will well placed to get back in top 4. It’s just the maths and FFP thats concerns me but that more because I am in the dark on it and have to wait and see.

19th April 2023 at 8:41 am #206380That’s the thing, Nepolean, nobody really seems to know how the FFP rules “work” these days, certainly not our fellow cyber numpties on here…
Basic principles and a little bit of logic would think you need to get rid of a few in the summer just to start thinking about balancing the books, let alone create room for another splurge (jokes aside, if you lot go out and spend another 200m plus… questions not already being asked will certainly need to be ask with regards to what’s the point of FFP?).
At least we both still have the Mighty Wrexhams!! 🙂

19th April 2023 at 8:43 am #206381Apprently Cheif Dodger Todger has just tweeted, “Do not worry, fellow Chelsea fans, we’ll win the 3rd leg 5-0!”

19th April 2023 at 8:46 am #206383It’s on 2 fronts now banjo.
The original rolling 3 year calculation regards maximum permitted loss is still there.
And we also have the new one which is yearly and will stipulate that next year a club can not spend over 90% of its income that year on its yearly costs towards wages, agents fee’s and the yearly amortised value of transfer fees.
The season after it will be capped at 80% then will settle at 70% year after.
Now Boehly obviously knows nothing about football, but if he gets the maths wrong there is no excuse.

19th April 2023 at 8:53 am #206384So twice the opportunity for clever accountants and their lifetime supply of Tipex to earn their crust… 🙂
Really getting confused with all the FFP rules, absolutely thinking the “creators” of such a system are using the “if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit” approach.

19th April 2023 at 9:00 am #206385Nah banjo there only two ways around it if you cant legitimately comply…Inflate your income, or hide/under record your out goings.
We haven’t got the sponsorship cheat code in place, if the maths doesn’t add up we will be sanctioned quicker than city could say they are innocent of all charges.

19th April 2023 at 9:05 am #206386Wasn’t picking on the Jammy Dodgers, was being generally insulting to all clubs… 🙂
Although I can predict a legal argument for your lot along the lines of “not our fault, COVID and Government sanctions etc…” when the numbers don’t add up.
At least that’s one thing us Spud-lovers don’t have to worry about, not with owners tighter than a ducks butt running the show.

19th April 2023 at 9:09 am #206387I wasn’t taking it as a dig bud, I sensed your frustration at FFP itself as not doing what it should and being too ambiguous.

19th April 2023 at 9:10 am #206388Banjo, EVERY club had special dispensation for COVID losses mate.
Chelsea will also rightly claim dispensation for severe loss of income during sanctions.
Both will surely be granted but won’t add up to much mate.

19th April 2023 at 9:26 am #206389In fairness, as bad as Chelsea have been, Liverpool and Arsenal have shown everyone this season just how quickly a club’s fortunes can change, albeit in opposite directions. Arsenal have gone from 18 points behind Liverpool at this point last season to 27 in front, a 45 point swing. I think unless you’re Man City, every single club other top club can have massive swings in either direction based on a couple of bad (or good) decisions/signings.

19th April 2023 at 9:51 am #206390No offence taken, Nepolean, and you’re right about me thinking the current FFP rules aren’t worth the toilet paper they’re written on… 🙂

19th April 2023 at 9:52 am #206391Anyway, how much “loss” can be claimed from the sanctions?? Some match day revenue perhaps, but the season tickets were already paid for, so was the TV money etc…
I mean, how many burgers could you have sold? 🙂

FFP Chap: “Over the course of 7 games?”
Dodger Chap: “No, that’s per game.”

19th April 2023 at 10:27 am #206395Ed, we had that scenario with Rodgers in 2015 when he brought in several players in one hit; e.g. Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi, Dejan Lovren.
When you throw them all into the first 11, they need time to adjust, settle, grow and establish themselves.
We have already one example at Chelsea with Joao Felix. The tough challenge is that it’s key playing positions you are filling and you’re wanting an instant shoe-in and turnaround. Plus all that weight of expectation and responsibility then lies on those new players.
It’s not Championship manager and this blueprint proves you can’t just throw money at it because there are other ingredients that need harvesting.
I appreciate all the other factors to take into account; i.e. Roman, replacement owner, management changes, injuries, players leaving etc. It’s going to definitely need time away from involvement in competitive football and go into the summer with a full evaluation.
Right now till the end in the meantime, it’s essentially playing for the blue shirt and pride.
