Didn’t see anything at all of the game but I did say to a mate that I thought we’d struggle prior to the game. I think we struggle more v teams like Athletico and Napoli that are very well drilled and very disciplined as opposed to teams that come at you more like real etc. Hopefully we will see the Anfield effect in the return leg but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a draw.

21st February 2020 at 4:39 am #73039AnonymousOz, that’s how I felt too man. I think the vast majority of Liverpool fans had some sense that it would be a tough fixture but it will be a different story at Anfield alright. I’m not taking a win for granted there either, as they have a goal and might look to protect and counter but we’ve had our wake-up call and we’re only going into this a goal down.
We’ve got to have a measured response now for the return leg and just be a bit wary of conceding. If that happens we’re going to need to really go at them, so we’ve got to be just as focused on not conceding, as we do in scoring.
But ya, Oz, you didn’t miss much man if I’m honest. It was a lot of huffing and puffing but we did break them down reasonably well, regardless of what the actual chances created stats show. Trent was woefully off form, so we didn’t have that avenue to exploit really, which we will at Anfield.

21st February 2020 at 8:22 am #73149Good EL wins for Arsenal, Wolves and Rangers who came back from two goals down good draws for United and Celtic all should go through perhaps with the exception of Rangers who might find it tough.
An unlikely win for Getafe puts Ajax one of the favourites for the EL at risk.

25th February 2020 at 1:18 am #75322Lads ( or lasses, or whatever you identify as, don’t want to offend anyone) I think we will struggle in the return leg v Athletico. As I said before teams like them and Napoli are very well coached and disciplined and I can see a tough night coming up. Anfield has produced some unbelievable nights over the years so hopefully the faithful will turn up the volume and the players will respond in kind but we aren’t exactly killing it at the moment so we need to up the ante if we are to get through this one.

25th February 2020 at 4:43 am #75465AnonymousI definitely had my concerns about the 1st leg but I have less going into this, in one sense.
I am not concerned about the result over 90 minutes. My only worry is that they might score and then we’ll have to get 3. Besides that, I am confident of the win on the night.
Having said that, I still think we’ll go through. It won’t be easy that’s for sure but Anfield in the KO stages is probably the best stadium in the world to have behind you. We definitely aren’t playing our best football ATM but we are still getting the results that we need. We have a history of finding a way, so I think we’ll find a way.
There are a number of games to go before then, in order for us to find form once again but even as poor-ish as last night’s match was, there was some improvement in aspects. Well, ok, there was a big improvement in one aspect and that was our play from the flanks. This for me is the most important part of our game, especially against the well organized defensive types. Teams can try to park the bus but if Trent and Robertson are on form then it won’t matter, they’ll land something on someone and that’ll be that.
Defensively though we’ll have to be better than we were against West Ham. I was very tired watching the game, as my sleeping pattern is… well it’s pretty normal if I was your neighbour Oz π … Couldn’t promise to be a good one though (sorry, couldn’t help myself). As I was saying though, I know I missed ana wful lot from that 1st half but for me it seemed like Fabinho and Gomez didn’t have great games and they’ll have to pick it up. I also don’t think Keita was any good and I really don’t like to say it but we could have used Hendo last night. The only reason I don’t like to say it though is because people might think I’m only saying nice things about him to warm the crowd or what have you… but we definitely could have used him. Ox came on and changed the game.
I would usually give out about a player coming on and instantly reverting to speculative efforts but I have a feeling that he was instructed to do it, in order to not necessarily get that goal from range (although there’s always a chance with him) but to light a fire in the other fans/players bellies and it worked. Anfield found it’s voice and the players found their legs.
The return leg probably won’t need this and with a bit of luck, I think we’ll see some of that swash-buckling football that we play when we’re on it. Now, I could be wrong and we might go out but I just don’t think so, not yet.

25th February 2020 at 8:24 am #75618Atletico will be a tougher nut to crack than Barca although Liverpool need 2 goals without reply they will still be favourites to go through.
I think the tie may swing on how early Liverpool score and they have to keep Atletico out too who will be encouraged by what they saw last night.
But it’s not for two more weeks and there is plenty of CL football to come before then!

25th February 2020 at 2:48 pm #75875AnonymousFair enough Sean. I definitely don’t take Atletico lightly. I’m not FULL of confidence but I think it’ll most likely be us in the next round. Nine, they will definitely be a tougher nut to crack, as they won’t wilt like Barca did. Credit has to go to Liverpool for that insane performance though and also to the fans for creating such an inspirational atmosphere. Both can be done again but maybe to a more normal level this time, as that was a miracle night.
We don’t need 3 goals before a ball is kicked but I still think that if we hit the level we’re capable of, we could get them if needed.
The first leg was a real wake up call for the players but I doubt that Klopp was even slightly surprised. I guess there isn’t much more to say on it, other than I wish Nine were wrong and that it were being played sooner.
in the meantime though Nine, Chelsea will have to pull out a top performance if they are to get past Bayern but I think they have it in them. The CL might be just what they need to galvanize them.
You’ve no idea how much I both want Napoli to knock Barca out but for us to then not be drawn against Napoli, if we’re to get through π Barca will struggle to beat them in Naples. I predict a home win there.

25th February 2020 at 3:04 pm #75889Liverpool will be favourites Mak and rightly so. Should be a really good game attack v defence with Atletico looking to catch Liverpool on the break. That’s not Liverpool’s favourite game they like teams to come on to them and then to catch them on the break with their pace and the quality of their full backs.
I don’t think the atmosphere will bother Atletico they are used to difficult atmospheres at both Real and Barca.
Massive test for Chelsea against Bayern who are rightly favourites for this tie hopefully we put up a performance at least. Kante is a massive miss.

25th February 2020 at 4:05 pm #75935AnonymousAh ya Nine, when I talk about atmosphere, it’s more about how it will motivate Liverpool, not strike fear into the hearts of the Atleti. If Liverpool really get moving though, I imagine that might be something to be fearful of.
Nine, I must admit that I wasn’t up on Chelsea’s current woes. Kante out will be such a difficult hurdle to over-come for Chelsea. this is the exact game you’d really need him there for. He’s been there and done that. he’d settle the defence a bit (if played in the DM role…) BTW, speaking of that, is he still not being played as a DM?
I might not catch the match tonight but I’ll be hoping for a Chelsea win.

25th February 2020 at 9:51 pm #76190Fortunately I wasn’t expecting anything tonight. Tbh it’s actually been a delight to watch this Bayern side they’re the best team we’ve played this season by some distance imo.
Nobody will want to draw Bayern going forwards they’ll take some stopping with quality all over the pitch.

26th February 2020 at 5:58 am #76522AnonymousLiverpool managed to beat Bayern away last season. I guess there is a 1% chance there to over-come such a massive scoreline. It’s better than absolutely no chance and if it does happen it’ll be one of the most special nights in your history.

26th February 2020 at 7:42 am #76577Mak, the ties well and truly over mate last 16 was always imo the best we could hope for currently the transfer ban following the loss of Hazard left us short and the recent injuries to Kante, Pulisic, Hudson Odoi and Abraham as well as the almost season long injury to Loftus Cheek just added to that.
Getting out of Munich without a complete mauling would be a bonus. Bayern are a fine team and a better team than last season who no one will be keen to draw going forwards.
Best of luck though to City tonight and all the other PL Clubs in their forthcoming CL games.
