Brian, I thought you’d been in a time machine and gone back to the 1950’s. If only buddie eh.
Do you remember when players went on a bus to the ground mixed in with the supporters and mixed with fans after the game to sign autographs?
I don’t think money is the main motivation for Messi at all he was prepared to reduce his wages at Barca by Β£250k pw and suggested he was prepared to go even lower if asked by Barca to stay there.
I think Messi’s sole motivation now be it at Barca or PSG is to try and win the CL again and PSG with a front three of him Neymar and Mbappe gives him a decent chance of doing that. Cheers 9’s

9th August 2021 at 1:38 pm #182463AnonymousWorth reminding that although Barca were going to offering him 50% of his wages, he was going to get a 4-5 year contract. It’s likely that he wouldnt actually stay this long and would cash out the remainder of his contract, or at least a negotiated percentage. So basically, a lot less of a pay-cut that it might sound.
The deal at PSG is apparently 25m a year after tax it’s only over 2 years but that’s a pay-rise. He will definitely have a chance at the CL but I still think it was mostly money motivated. Just my opinion. He could win the CL at a number of PL sides, with a BIG chance of a PL title on top of it. He wouldnt get paid anywhere near that money though.
That forward line sounds terrifying alright. Only one of them can have the ball at any given time though.

9th August 2021 at 2:30 pm #182465“It was previously revealed that Messiβs last contract paid him $674 million over the four-year term ($168.5 million per year), thus the new deal is expected to pay him close to $85 million per year and just over $420 million should he remain at the club for the duration.” NBC Sports
It’s all supposition Mak none of us can look into the future with any certainty my personal view is that after 2/3 seasons he would have moved on to the MLS and wouldn’t have looked to stiff Barca but I don’t know either.
Messi has stated that it’s his ambition to win the CL again I believe him and PSG imo gives him a great chance of doing that with the signings they’ve made this Summer their team looks really strong and only City are ahead of them in the odds to win the CL but as we all know it’s not always the best team that wins the CL and it’s quite unpredictable. Time will tell.
Assessing the world’s best players is a bit like a beauty contest one man’s meat is another man’s poison.π

9th August 2021 at 2:58 pm #182467AnonymousAh ya I know Nine, we don’t have to agree but I respect your position on this. Another day, having looked at it differently, I might have come to a different conclusion myself. If Messi really was on that kinda money, that’s totally mental BTW.
As for the CL, well it takes more than raw talent to win them, as you well know. Your team has to have the stones to be able to pull it out of the bag on the night, not just over a season. I think this is why City haven’t won it yet but they are getting closer. Pep needs to stop over-thinking it, although we cant just assume that a manager of his quality and team of it’s quality just deserves a CL title.
I give them a big big chance of it this season though. A lot will depend on how Grealish and Kane settle in (presuming they get Kane). I think they’ll both be big successes at City, personally. I’d love for us to have gone for him but I think Liverpool have their eyes on a certain youngster, instead of the transfer market.
Going back to Messi, I guess what really gets me is the total lack of will to win the PL. I know that many players see La Liga as the ultimate league but i’d just have imagined that the last few decades would have at least made them think that the PL is a new type of worthwhile challenge.
SEEMS NOT!
Going back to PSG, Neymar left Barca to be the main man somewhere. MBappe will probably leave in order to do the same thing, himself. Will all 3 play a season together, or will we see a shock move for one of the 2? π
This is the point where Bingo from TT leaps in to say that MBappe is on his way to Liverpool LOL. No of course not but maybe someone else can afford one of them?

9th August 2021 at 3:32 pm #182468Mak, yeah I think that might have been the value over a 5 year period all yesterday’s fish and chip paper now though.π
I think City will win the CL sooner rather than later I think City’s strength might be their weakness as when it gets to the final stages of the CL City are generally chasing multiple trophies which can be an added pressure.

Paris is a lovely City to live in I agree there’s little value in Messi winning the French League but I think his focus is on winning another CL trophy also as I understand it no PL Clubs made a move for Messi so coming to the PL was never an option this season.

I can’t think of any Club who could afford to buy Neymar. Mbappe will either leave on a free transfer next Summer imo probably for Real Madrid or sign a new contract at PSG I think probably the former rather than the latter is more likely it’s tough to predict the future either way but I very much doubt anything will happen in the Mbappe direction this Summer.
At least you can feel confident that it’s a Bingo free zone on here.π€£

9th August 2021 at 3:48 pm #182470Nine…I do remember the bus trips and players on buses very well but late 40s
City had two club houses attached to the ground, Alex Herd had one, he could go out of his back door and was inside the ground!!! He was lucky.
As to the transfer levels we are out now, it is only a matter of time until we see a quarter million player. I have witnessed coming through the first Β£10K player then 15, then 20 etc etc the arguments on the premise never change.
I find it sad, in comparison to what is happening in the world outside but then we are all driven by TV,Celebs, under achieving politicians, sponsors and agents it is the world that has gone daft. I suppose it will all end up as the same situation as Barca are in because this level of debt carrying is not sustainable. Some may claim that debt is OK as long as it is serviceable, that is bunkum because debt increases faster than sales once it gets to the higher levels and worth is only what somebody is prepared to pay_____________________________

Ya, MBappe to real sounds like it to me also, assuming they can sort their finances out enough to make it happen. This will likely be post-covid in any meaningful way (with regards to fans in seats, that is), so they’ll shift things around and make it happen. of course, I dont really know much about this wage limit they have for La Liga but Im sure they’ll find a way.

9th August 2021 at 3:56 pm #182476AnonymousBrian, clubs only end up like Barca via mismanagement. The majority of well run clubs out there took a freak scenario like covid and are still standing very strong. if ever there was a scenario that would expose poorly run clubs, it was one like this and I’m not even slightly surprised to see the 2 main suffering parties are the La Liga giants.
I wont get too high on my horse, as I once read the percentage of Liverpool’s revenue that is spent on wages. although the number eludes me now, it was a worryingly high amount. So, we might be “well run’, definitely by comparison, yet besides Konate, we haven’t spent this summer. Of course the argument goes, do we really need anyone?
TBD I guess.

9th August 2021 at 4:03 pm #182477Completely agree Mak a Club with a revenue of just under $800m shouldn’t be in the trouble that Barca are but bad purchases, wages that are too high coupled with the Pandemic was the perfect storm.

9th August 2021 at 4:18 pm #182480Mak…I agree..there are well run clubs but they are few and far between. I believe City are a well run club but at some point they will sell, so will Utd and Liverpool. I can see Chinese, Indian and more Middle eastern countries having more than a passing interest. Everything moves on, not always for the better at times. Oddly, for some reason I cannot explain, I do not think RA at Chelsea will move on. All guesswork on my part. Covid is probably the best excuse available but you have to wonder in the years of making profit a rainy day fund was not on the agenda. Pre Covid….clubs have gone broke and that was getting to become a real danger point for many others. However, this opens up a wider subject of how we support smaller clubs through bad times, I am all for that but due diligence has to be strictly enforced, I would not like to see money still going into Directors pockets until viability was assured
I have no answers only suggestions but the state of the game is a concern in the UK, we have a good format that needs better guidance_____________________________

9th August 2021 at 4:39 pm #182484AnonymousMoney talks, so I don’t think we’ll see enough regulation to truly secure anything. Teams will continue to be driven by greed, exploiting where they can and stretching their finances, to various acceptable risk levels.
I for one am really looking forward to this season though. I think it might just be one of the best Pl season in decades.

9th August 2021 at 8:45 pm #182500Mak. like you I am looking forward to this season, just sad I will not be in my usual seat, however I plan on going to the odd game. It has the making of a good season with , in my opinion, will have 6 teams competing at the top but the hard games will be against the mid and lower table teams

10th August 2021 at 12:36 pm #182520With Messi to PSG now as good as confirmed, if Poch doesn’t win the French league title (never mind the CL) with that side, he should retire from football! π There’s a case for Messi, Mbappe and Neymar being the best front 3 the game has seen, assuming they play together and nobody leaves.

10th August 2021 at 5:04 pm #182524AnonymousTommy Abraham is reportedly unhappy about a move from the Premier League to Serie A despite a Roma switch in the pipeline. His not keen on Jose Mourinho or leaving the country. I’m still not sure why Lukaka is considered that much better than Abraham when one sees the amount of money concerned.
