Pep’s proven to change players both mentally and through their development. He’s also smart in the clubs he chooses to manage. And clearly, he won’t go anywhere where he’s not financially backed 100%.

6th August 2021 at 11:13 am #182303This is quite interesting from Balague on the City situation and why their transfer thinking possibly changed after the results improved after January and why it looks more likely Messi will end up at PSG now.
Lionel Messi to Manchester City? 👀@GuillemBalague has the latest…⤵️#bbcfootball #MCFC #Messi

6th August 2021 at 12:42 pm #182305Yeah, looking increasingly likely that it will be PSG for Messi. What a waste of probably the best front three in world football (maybe ever?) to have Messi, Neymar and Mbappe running riot in a poor French league.
Definitely puts a spanner in the works for Pogba to PSG.
Saying all that, could Messi be coming in to replace Mbappe with Mbappe going to Real potentially? Would make more sense from an affordability perspective for PSG. Assuming Real themselves can even make that deal happen, which is far from certain.

6th August 2021 at 1:39 pm #182306Hell of a front three to try and win the CL with though Ed.😊
Re Pogba can’t see him leaving this Summer when he can sign a pre contract with whoever he wants in January on probably a massive salary same probably applies to Mbappe too.
Next Summer is potentially going to be even more interesting than this one.

6th August 2021 at 1:54 pm #182307Yeah Nine, I think that’s been his and Raiola’s plan for a while now with Pogba. String Utd along making them think an extension is a possibility, leaving it until the last minute which ensures one of 2 things happens:
1. Utd offer him a last minute extension out of desperation in an attempt to save face. Losing him twice on a free would not look good. Utd are then faced with the choice of extending or replacing him, both which come at a significant cost.
2. Leave for free and a massive new salary somewhere else including a huge signing on fee and agent fee. Such as what he did with Donnarumma. To summarise, I think Chelsea will end up being glad they avoided getting involved with Raiola through Haaland!
This is where Utd have been very poorly run for a few years. To have Pogba and Lingard, two hugely valuable assets with 12 months left each is just not very good business by the club. We’ve never been good at selling players for good prices or selling players at the right time. There’s potentially £80-£100mil worth of sale value we may now get nothing for.

6th August 2021 at 2:41 pm #182310Ed…as I have said before….Messi will not be joining City. free agent or not….I doubt Paris either but is the only option in Europe, MSL most likely I think

Yes I agree with that Ed getting involved with Raiola was always my fear re Haaland.

6th August 2021 at 2:45 pm #182312I know you’ve said that Brian but they’ve been chasing him and were very interested in him last summer, despite what you’ve been saying.
Pep’s just confirmed they won’t now go for him though after having brought Grealish in. Also admitted they were very interested in Kane. That one is surely going to happen.

6th August 2021 at 2:54 pm #182313Brian, whilst I suspect Messi will eventually end up playing in the MSL imo he’s probably still got a couple of very good seasons in him at the highest level which the MSL is not and I would be amazed if he doesn’t end up playing at a big Club in Europe over the next couple of seasons.

6th August 2021 at 3:08 pm #182314Pep Guardiola says Manchester City could only afford Jack Grealish after raising £60million in player sales – meaning the Aston Villa captain “cost £40m”.
Grealish’s blockbuster transfer to City was confirmed on Thursday night, bringing the England international’s near 20-year association with Villa to an end.
The Premier League champions installed Grealish as a priority target after he enjoyed another excellent season and the 25-year-old signed a six-year contract at the Etihad.
The £100m fee Villa received makes Grealish the most expensive player in British transfer history but Guardiola says the actual cost of the deal to City was only £40m because of the money his side have banked by selling and loaning players in the last year.
ASHLEY PREECE ON WHAT DANNY INGS BRINGS TO ASTON VILLA ON AND OFF THE PITCH
“We spent £40m on Jack Grealish,” Guardiola said at a press conference on Friday. “We paid £100m and brought £60m in the last year. He will wear the number 10, because we were incredibly convinced with Grealish.“We were convinced too that Leo (Messi) would continue at Barcelona, so right now he is not in our thoughts. Absolutely not.”
City sold Jack Harrison to Leeds United for a reported £13m, Lukas Nmecha to Wolfsburg for £8.5m and Ivan Ilic to Hellas Verona for £8m, while banking an £11m sell-on fee from Jadon Sancho’s move to rivals Manchester United.

6th August 2021 at 3:21 pm #182316So Bernardo Silva among several players who want to leave City sounds like City are revving up to bring some money in for some reason.
Pep admits City want Kane but if Spurs don’t want to negotiate it is finished. Cards on the table from City.
Funny we were told by Pep City couldn’t afford to pay £100m for a player now he’s proposing that City will sign two £100m players.😊

6th August 2021 at 3:35 pm #182317Well if that’s how it works, Utd got Maguire for free as we sold Lukaku and Darmian for a combined £80mil that summer 😁. Nice bit of spin by Pep but it won’t change the fact that he has assembled the most expensive squad in history and is surely going to break the PL transfer record twice in the same summer.
Selling bit-part players as a result of having stockpiled players through the years does not make this deal any smaller.
Pressure massively on Pep now to deliver the CL.

6th August 2021 at 3:48 pm #182319ED…Messi…my point is that, in my opinion why would Messi want to come to the EPL when he will be thinking of more lifestyle and future business opportunities, not so much football, at this stage. Paris will give him a little more than Manchester and an easier way of life but MSL will offer him more. He may confound us all and sign for Fleetwood F.C!!!!!

6th August 2021 at 3:49 pm #182320Brian, as Nine alluded to, Messi still has so much to give at the top level if football. He’ll go to a top club for sure.

6th August 2021 at 4:05 pm #182324All this discussion on spending on players as if it is something new. It is new for City, for years we have been the butt end of jokes about how poor we are and cannot afford decent players and we struggled, everybody laughed at us, Other clubs were spending the equivalent to to-days prices, now the new age fans either forget that part of our history, I, along with many other City fans do not. It is our turn now, it will not last forever but we will enjoy it while we can until somebody else comes along and they will enjoy the same way..
It is silly money but it has always been silly money and the growth (that is debatable also) of the game has taken its course. In a way, you can almost separate football and finance as the different entities they are. Fans think inside the box, successful business think outside it. Logic no longer counts as far as a players worth is concerned. It was interesting what KDB has just told Grealish…”Now. the hard work starts”_____________________________
