Brian, in times gone by football was a sport. But it’s now big business and taken extremely seriously and that filters down to the fans and a lot can obviously depend on players coming or going in a very competitive market. In some ways you look at it, with all the pressure it builds on the players and the seriousness of it from the media and the fans which unsurprisingly morphs into hate on the stands and on social media, not to mention the absurd sums of money now involved, and you think, is it all worth it? Particularly with seemingly increasing mental health issues coming out.
There was a recent story about Wijnaldum I believe in which apparently he bemoaned the online fans criticism of him over the season. Now I don’t exactly know how much of an impact this may have had on him leaving, but either way, he’s there often busting a gut on the pitch, and then he sees the moaning online. You can understand his frustration and him thinking, why do I bother?
Then there’s the recent story with Jack Grealish’s girlfriend saying she was receiving up to 200 death threats a day.
I think I’d have preferred the culture in the older days. The German league also looks more traditional and though Bayern obviously dominate a lot, the other clubs are still quite competitive, but it’s ultimately just fun for the fans, and win lose or draw, they seem to enjoy their day out, which is how it should be. Whereas even just one loss now, particularly at a big club, can almost lead to a public inquiry.

4th August 2021 at 7:46 am #182221Double B, all “Fook-Face” had to do was release a nice simple statement at the end of last season saying “time has come to move to pastures new” and hand in an official transfer request, and all Spud-lovers would have wished him the best of luck (as deep down we all know he deserves it). What he shouldn’t have done is go all snidey about things, do stupid interviews with Neville Neville’s eldest Neville, and be all ‘gentlemanly’ about leaking things about gentlemen’s agreements and generally throwing his toys out his gold plated pram.
Best case is he’s been badly advised by his advisers, worst (and most likely case) is he’s acting like a tit.

4th August 2021 at 10:28 am #182229This was only ever going to get messy. Levy would never stick to a gentlemanโs agreement and why did Kane sign a 6 year contract?
Let him go and get the most money you can for him

4th August 2021 at 11:33 am #182230Why did Kane sign another contract, I would hazard a guess that the gentlemanโs agreement was โyou sign a long contract and that way we get a really good price for you should you decide you want to leave after this seasonโ obviously Levy had his fingers crossed behind his back at the timeโฆ.. 4th August 2021 at 12:37 pm #182231Who signs a 6 year deal though pagan?
He wants to go so let him go be getting absolutely silly money for him. Also spurs already spending his fee by the looks of it.
Chelsea will get lackau. Will take 100m
Grealish to city. Huge deals going down

4th August 2021 at 1:25 pm #182234To be fair to Kane when he signed that 6 year contract in 2018 Spurs were on an upward curve under Pochettino they had gone close to winning the PL, a new Stadium was about to be unveiled, they were a CL Club a season later about to get to a CL Final.
At the time of Kane signing that contract it made sense for both parties Spurs tied down their star man until he was 31 to lead them into the new Stadium and Kane doubled his money to ยฃ200,000 pw.
But even a week is a long time in football and 6 years is almost a lifetime Spurs are probably much further away from winning a trophy now than they’ve ever been there is no Pochettino they are no longer a CL Club and in the short to medium term are unlikely to be and they’ve dropped down to the third level of playing in Europe next season playing in the Europa Conference League against Clubs most of us have never heard of.
The so called gentlemen’s agreement allegedly came about last Summer between Kane and Levy and seemingly related to Spurs developing further last season and winning trophies unfortunately neither happened.
It was almost certainly unwise of Kane to tie himself to Spurs for another 6 years in 2018 and until he is 31 but you can see why it happened.
There’s no Real Madrid to dig Levy out of this one as there was with Meric and Bale and as Sean said this morning the only sensible solution now is for Spurs to try and get the best price they can for Kane and move on Levy might be able to get the price a bit above ยฃ100m mark but realistically City are the only likely takers and I can’t see City going anywhere near his alleged prospective price of ยฃ150m and if Levy sticks out for that price I suspect both Kane and Spurs will be stuck with each other this season which probably won’t help either of them or Nuno.
Historically these things usually end with the player ultimately leaving if it doesn’t happen this Summer I doubt Spurs will get anywhere near ยฃ100m for Kane next Summer because at 29 Kane is a diminishing asset.

4th August 2021 at 1:32 pm #182236Looks like Lukaku might happen Sean probably the best option given all the circumstances.
Chelsea have already banked getting on for ยฃ60m from fringe player sales towards the cost of Lukaku and I suspect further sales will follow too possibly Abraham etc.

4th August 2021 at 4:58 pm #182244Mikus…a good post and good overview. My biggest problem is the word “expectancy” but the world moves on, I believe not in the best way at times when you see what is happening now in society.
Chuky…you are perfectly right…that was all it need from Kane but also Mr Levy for his style of management…he will loose this round, one way or another and his demands will not be met. I suppose to be fair to Mr Levy he will sell but only at his price…here lies the biggest problem and just how good he is at managing his strategy. It is clear to me then that Kane is not so much the issue but how much revenue I can collect because he has bills to pay and players to buy, if he is not quick he may loose the City offer. (hope so!!!!)

4th August 2021 at 5:20 pm #182245Thought we might see a midfielder sign but doubt it now as it looks like money be spend on improved contracts
What makes klopp recent success more special is we canโt spend money like city or utd but we need to spend.
Canโt see us causing city to much hassle this season
Think Chelsea and Utd better equipped for a tithe challenge

4th August 2021 at 8:00 pm #182246“Aston Villa have announced the signing of striker Danny Ings from Southampton.
The Athletic understands Villa have paid ยฃ30 million for the 29-year-old England international, who has signed a three-year deal.
The striker has entered the final 12 months of a three-year contract on the south coast and opted against extending, which raised the possibility of a sale in this window.
Head Coach Dean Smith told Villaโs website: โDanny is an outstanding Premier League footballer who has scored goals wherever he has played.
“He is also a top professional with a great character who will be a leader in our squad and a role model for our rapidly developing young Academy players who are now in and around the first team. I am delighted to welcome Danny to our great Club.โ
