“All overseas players joining English clubs must qualify for entry through a points-based system when the Brexit transition period ends on 31 December.
Points will be awarded for senior and youth international appearances, club appearances and the pedigree of the selling club.
The Football Association, the Premier League and the English Football League have come together to agree the plan.
Clubs will also not be able to sign overseas players until they are 18.
Signings of overseas players aged under 21 will be limited to three in the January transfer window and six per season after that.
Post-Brexit, English clubs will not be able to sign players freely from the European Union, and the new system sets out the rules for transfers once the transition period ends.”

2nd December 2020 at 7:27 am #171378There were bound to be changes following Brexit but based on threeps post and the report below from the Metro the rule changes could have been worse.
The biggest negative is not being able to sign under 18’s which allows the top European Club’s to hoover up all the best youngsters.
“The Football Association, the Premier League and the English Football League submitted a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) proposal last month, which has now been approved by The Home Office. The criteria will provide the framework for clubs to sign overseas players when the UK leaves the European Union after December 31. Premier League clubs will no longer be able to sign foreign youngsters under the age of 18 after after post-Brexit transfer rules were confirmed on Tuesday evening.
Clubs will also be restricted to just three overseas signings under the age of 21 from January onwards, and only six foreign players per season moving forwards. Premier League clubs will find it increasingly difficult to compete for the signings of young players.
Post Brexit, players from EU countries will be required to gain a GBE, like the work-permit system for other overseas players. The GBE will operate a points system based on senior and youth international appearances, club appearances and the quality of the selling club and its league. Players accumulating the requisite amount of points will earn a GBE automatically, while players just below the threshold may be considered for a GBE by an Exceptions Panel.
Richard Masters, the Premier Leagueβs chief executive, said: βThe Premier League has worked with the FA to come to an agreement to ensure no part of Brexit should damage the success of the Premier League, or the prospects of the England teams.
βWe welcome the news that the Home Office has approved the Governing Body Endorsement plan for the January 2021 transfer window. βContinuing to be able to recruit the best players will see the Premier League remain competitive and compelling and the solution will complement our player development philosophy of the best foreign talent alongside the best homegrown players. βFollowing the January transfer window, we look forward to reviewing the agreement with the FA.” The Metro

2nd December 2020 at 10:59 am #171383I got that from the beeb and they used Kante when he signed for Leicester as an example of a transfer that would not happen. There are many other examples of very good players that could also be used to illustrate the issue.
I believe with the current WP for non-EU players if they don’t meet the criteria then you can pay a certain amount and that is then ok, like what LFC did with Gruic.
On one hand it means teams will need to rely more on developing their own young players instead or raiding the academies of others (does this work both ways?), but also means team will I think drop in quality over time.

2nd December 2020 at 2:33 pm #171407I do not see why it should make that much difference or even why it should. The restrictions will come mostly from the EC side, like the under18s has Nine as quoted but then that is tought on the kids who want to play here. The rest of the world is still available. Look at other sports as well, football is not isolated when the politicians play there games. There will be disruption no doubt designed by politician for political gain not for the good of sport or the fan base. To think we pay these clowns plus expense is mind blowing

2nd December 2020 at 2:35 pm #171408PS…The EC will also see this as a way to exclude British clubs no doubt about that

2nd December 2020 at 2:43 pm #171409Brian, top English sides have for a while now poached youngsters from overseas academies. Where do you think the likes of Eric Garcia come from? This will no longer be allowed although I am not sure what will happen the other way, will the next Sancho be allowed to move away? As Nine says this could lead to English top teams missing out on the top young talent. As I said, it will lead to clubs having more reliance on their youth development and youth recruitment within the UK borders.

2nd December 2020 at 2:48 pm #171412tweeps…not a bad thing then if we have to rely on our own development, I am all for that. We will, like other clubs though look at Brazil, Argentina, USA etc…this is a global game name not EEC one

2nd December 2020 at 3:07 pm #171416You cannot sign South American players unless they either meet the work permit criteria (which I doubt youngsters do) or they have a European second nationality and from next transfer window the above will apply to them also. No more Garcia, Martinelli, Fabregas, Suso, Deulefeu etc.(think they all came from Barcelona academy and I am sure there are dozens more in the Premier League from other places).

2nd December 2020 at 3:56 pm #171421Brian, some other sports have restricted the number of overseas players that teams can sign, so this will have little or no effect on them….Pagan

2nd December 2020 at 10:18 pm #171439threes…those rules will change, like many other rules. However, like I said previously I have no problem with developing our own talent, what has happened before, may well not happen again but that is still no reason with all the facilities and structure here we cannot build a good future……if only we could get good management of our game at the top.!!!!
