i can’t fucking stand talksport and i have no idea why i listen to it because all i do is moan about it. but the other day they had a fun little chat about who is the best foreign footballer to have played in the premier league. there is no right or wrong answer but there is a hell of a list to go by.
so who do people think is the best foreign import to the premier league?

24th August 2018 at 9:58 am #25709AnonymousZola remember he only came here at the older age of 30. Cannot even imagine what wonders he would have created if he was here say 5 years earlier.

24th August 2018 at 10:35 am #25710Ronaldo
Arrived at the age of 17 and within 3-4 years took the PL by storm. Won everything at United too. 3 x PL titles on the trot, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League, Ballon d’or, world player of the year. This was done by the age of 23.

24th August 2018 at 11:02 am #25713It depends what the criteria are. Ronaldo is the only one talked about as a contender in the GOAT category so surely there is no other contender? There have been many other fantastic imports who have made a huge impact on the league but I’m struggling to see past Ronaldo. The likes of Zola, Bergkamp were outstanding but nobody ever mentions any of these players in a “Greatest Ever” debate. Now if the question was about who my favourite foreign import was, I’d definitely include the likes of Bergkamp, Zola, Henry etc.

24th August 2018 at 11:26 am #25715Anonymousi think ronaldo is mentioned as greatest ever based on his performances and records since being at madrid. at the time he left united he was up there with the best in the world but definitely wasnt considered one of the greatest ever at that time. lets stick with performances at the time of being in the premier league.
as a spurs fan it pains me but i would have to go with either bergkamp or henry. probably have paulinho in third!

24th August 2018 at 11:59 am #25716Still would go for Ronaldo, even though his best years were in La Liga. What he did and won in 2007-2008 still goes unmatched today by any PL player. Henry and Bergkamp were brilliant, along with the likes of Zola, Cantona and others. Ronaldo went from being a 1 trick pony to 1 of the most complete footballers in the PL. Just had everything in him. Ronaldo could play out wide and up top.

24th August 2018 at 1:35 pm #25718Not CR7 for me,because he achieved almost everything while playing for Real Madrid. My vote goes to T.Henry!

24th August 2018 at 1:59 pm #25719Anonymousits funny. in these kind of discussions there is always such a bias towards attacking players. they are the ones that always grab the headlines. however i think argeuments can be made players such as schmeichel, van der sar, keane, vieira even carvalho or vidic. they were by far the best at what they did. obviously people would rather pay to see the likes of ronaldo, henry, zola etc. but there are some defensive players that were just on a different level

24th August 2018 at 4:45 pm #25724Yeah fair points on Ronaldo, although I’d still say he’s a huge contender. I don’t think the fact he went on to even better things should let us forget just how much he achieved whilst at Utd, from the skinny 18 Yr old he arrived as. In terms of impact, I’d have to say Bergkamp, Zola and Cantona are hard to separate. For longevity and the fact we saw all his best years in the PL, it has to be Henry.
Good points Paxton on the different positions though. Schmeichel is arguably one of very few foreign imports who could put a claim in as being the best in their position ever. As good as Keane, Vieira, Henry etc were, would they get in an all time best ever XI from around the world? Ahead of the likes of Zidane, Xavi, Pele, Maradona? Schmeichel has a big claim for that keeper spot.

24th August 2018 at 4:46 pm #25725cm-In terms of trophies yes but,his move to Real made him what he is today. He won 4 CL with Real, the European Championship with Portugal,so many worlds player gongs, and the rivalry with Messi contributed to CR7 becoming what he is today.

24th August 2018 at 4:52 pm #25726To be fair though Mav, I’m not sure any of the other contenders mentioned won more in their careers at their clubs than Ronaldo did at Utd, regardless of what we went on to achieve. Surely makes it a bit of a moot point doesn’t it?

No doubting how brilliant Ronaldo was at Real Madrid, but the player you saw at Real Madrid was the player who was developed at Manchester United. He won 9 trophies in 6 years at United, he won 11 in 9 years at Real Madrid. United turned him in to one of the greatest players in the world, Real Madrid had the luxury of taking on this world class player and for him to show he is one the greatest ever.

24th August 2018 at 5:38 pm #25729Far too many great foreign players have come to the PL to choose just one player imo.

24th August 2018 at 6:34 pm #25731Ed & cm-Yes I agree chaps entirely with what you are saying but,Henry spent much longer than CR7 did and was instrumental for Arsenal for so many seasons, contributing week in week out.Henry could single- handedly decide a game, could dribble past few players and leave them for dead, just like what Messi does on regular basis now.Henry was a player I used to look forward to watch play. There hasnt been a player like Henry in the PL ever since imho. And not just on the pitch, off the pitch too, never causing or attracting scandals oor controversy, demanding new, improved contracts a few times a year-that we knew off! Dont remember TH14 ever scoring an easy,tap-in goal, all the goals I remember were a brilliant piece of skill and creativity.Pure genius!!!

24th August 2018 at 9:48 pm #25733Again I have to disagree Mav. Ronaldo was the next Henry in terms of how exciting he was in the PL. Ronaldo could glide past players too, left them for dead and was just brilliant to watch. Some veteran United fans say he is the best player to watch at Old Trafford since Best, with some saying he is better.
