Found this very interesting and I agree, they are not.
The semi circle makes sense and even as a kid I remember seeing the hockey goal area and wondering why the pen box in footie is a bloody rectangle!

3rd October 2022 at 6:57 pm #199480Haven’t watched the video….(but I will!)
But I’ve always thought peno’s were given away too easily these days… they should be given if an actual goal scoring opportunity was denied (not a toe-poke past the goalie towards the corner flag and a tumble) rather the simply because if happened in the box… absolutely stop teams/players “fishing” for them!
I’d also like to see peno’s given for “deliberate” fouls outside the box when stopping a breakaway… I wonder how many actual goals have been stopped when teams do this…

3rd October 2022 at 7:06 pm #199481It’s not about what they are given for banjo, it’s more comparing the probability of scoring a penalty to the probability a goal would have been scored from the location of the foul if the foul never occurred.

3rd October 2022 at 7:16 pm #199483Figured it was something like that… (I will watch it)… grinds my gears when you see players knowing they have absolutely no chance of scoring a “real” goal, go for the “smart” play as some pundits call it, and win a peno instead. Stupid rule.

3rd October 2022 at 7:22 pm #199485Yeah that’s exactly it banjo, it’s “winning” a very good chance to score, a penalty, from most often a very poor chance to score.

3rd October 2022 at 7:31 pm #199487An interesting video, I find once you start over analysing the game, changes will be made, then it becomes…how many changes do you need, the result will end up as not the game we grew up with. I am not against some change though, on the subject of penalties, I really think the attacking player should be going for goal and moving away from it, as we see many times now. I also think players should be penalised for not taking a throw in 20yds up field from where it should be. Back on penalties, I wonder if the game will develop into “specialist penalty takers” who come on the field just for that purpose??? Goalkeepers, I do not see a problem of them moving. I suppose, with more than a few possibilities of what can/cannot be done it has to be remembered for what it is, a PENALTY or scrap it and give a goal!!!! Nightmare in waiting!! Good subject

3rd October 2022 at 10:14 pm #199494Really interesting Lucky. It’s amazing how data and analytics has really changed the game and changed how we look at the game. Crazy the disparity in likelihood of scoring from the pen itself and the situation from which the pen was given.

3rd October 2022 at 10:51 pm #199495Yeah Ed I think we all felt it or knew it intuitively, but without the mass of data and the maths behind expected goals no one could really describe it.
Not really sure what exactly could balance it out, nothing could completely, but I am open to changes that could at least make it a little more balanced

3rd October 2022 at 11:53 pm #199496Always thought running penalties would come around sooner or later, initially for entertainment purposes like in the US. But as the video flags up, it may be less of a gimmick and more of a correction and so the idea could potentially gain more traction.

4th October 2022 at 7:47 am #199498Penalties should be banned, if it’s a foul in the box with a definite goal scoring opportunity you give the goal like they do in rugby, if it’s a foul but not a goal scoring opportunity you give a free kick from where it happened or if too close take it back 10 yards. Also red cards a reserve should be allowed on after 10 minutes, the player must get punished with a stiff suspension but it becomes an unfair game if a team is reduced to 10 players.

4th October 2022 at 8:23 am #199501Blueson, that’s the problem though, what is a definite goal scoring opportunity? I don’t think it can be practically defined. And to award a certain goal as compensation for the loss of a chance is unfair too.
There are exceptions though, remember reece James handball on the line at anfield last year? I know the refs were just following rules but in my opinion both the penalty and red card was unfair…What should have happened is that a goal should have been awarded to pool, because without James handling the ball it would have been a certain goal, so the award of a good chance at goal, the penalty, is not sufficient compensation for being illegally denied a certain goal. James would then have a yellow card for the handball and the game continue as 11 v 11.
